Most homeowners want shade - but not everyone wants to feel like they're sitting under a roof. That's the tension we run into a lot. One side of the family wants full coverage from the sun, the other wants that open, breezy feel. This combo build is our answer to that problem.
Here's what we put together: a solid aluminum patio cover attached to the house for full overhead protection, paired with an open lattice pergola extending outward. Two distinct structures, one clean design. The solid cover keeps direct sun and light rain off the main patio area, while the lattice section lets in filtered light and airflow - so the space never feels closed in.
Everything is aluminum. No wood means no rotting, no warping, and no repainting every couple of years. The clean white finish ties both sections together so it looks intentional, not like two separate things bolted together as an afterthought. The connection point between the two structures is one of the details we take seriously - it has to look right and hold up long-term.
The lattice patio cover section is doing a lot of work here. Those evenly spaced louvers cast a really distinct shadow pattern across the pavers below - it's that classic pergola look that makes a patio feel finished. Combined with the solid section, the whole setup gives you flexibility in how you use the space depending on the time of day or time of year.
If you've been sitting on a decision like this because you couldn't choose between a solid cover and a lattice pergola - you don't have to. We build both, and we build them together.
